Ten highlights of ‘Xuzhou’ guided missile frigate

First highlight: The “Xuzhou” guided missile frigate, which had been commissioned to the Navy of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) for only half a year, participated in the series military exercise code-named “Blue Whale” and obtained a good result of directly hitting the target in its first live-ammunition firing by launching the YJ-83 anti-ship missile in July 2008.

Second highlight: The “Xuzhou” ship participated in the target test of new-type main gun from September 2008 to December 2008. The officers and men conducted three anti-aircraft firings and directly hit all of the tow targets of new-type guided missiles on a cold and stormy sea, setting a precedent for the successful anti-missile test of medium-caliber naval gun weapon system.

Third highlight: The “Xuzhou” ship carried out two escort missions in the Gulf of Aden and the waters off the Somali coast from July to December in 2009 and from November 2010 to May 2011 respectively. It accomplished 62 escort missions for 631 Chinese and foreign ships and achieved the goal of 100% safety of the escorted ships and its own personnel and equipment.

Fourth highlight: The “Xuzhou” guided missile frigate took part in the joint military exercise between the Chinese and Russian naval escort taskforces on September 18, 2009 in a sea area of the Gulf of Aden. It hit the floating target at its first try while other warships tried vainly for several times.

Fifth highlight: The “Xuzhou” guided missile frigate, which had just arrived in the Gulf of Aden, sailed a long distance in a rush to rescue the “Lecong” ship attacked by pirates in November 2010, creating a precedent for meeting and escorting the ship hijacked by pirates in the Chinese Navy’s escort operations.

Seventh highlight: The “Xuzhou” guided missile frigate sailed 5,000-odd nautical miles continuously for 17 days and nights to the Mediterranean Sea and carried out the guard and escort mission for the ships evacuating Chinese people trapped in Libya in March 2011, opening up a safety passage for the compatriots.

Ninth highlight: After the China-Russia joint military exercise, the “Xuzhou” guided missile frigate participated in island-chain-breakthrough training without a rest and reorganization in May 2012. It broke through the second island chain in open sea training for the first time, fully demonstrating various performances of home-made equipment in an open-sea environment and providing an important reference for exploration and improvement of performances of warships of the same type.

  Tenth highlight: The “Xuzhou” guided missile frigate launched two anti-aircraft guided missiles successively in the simulated actual combat and successfully shot down two incoming missiles in the series live-ammunition military exercises code-named the “Blue Whale” in June 2012, demonstrating the reliable comprehensive combat ability of the new-type home-made guided missile frigate and tempering its troop unit’ actual-combat capability in complex environment.
